On the 13th of February, Cambridge travelled to Prested for the penultimate fixture in the East Anglia Pennant. Having won every match of the season so far, Cambridge were sitting comfortably at the top of the table and were hoping to continue this form to bring the pennant to CURTC!
Utilising both courts at Prested, up first was Andrew Barker and Jacqueline Siu simultaneously playing their singles. Andrew started well, but somewhat stumbled over the line to win 4-6. Jacqueline was unfortunate to lose several 40-all game points, and ended up losing 6-1. Up next was Alan Sharpe, who played very well to race to a 1-5 lead, until his opponent started to really gain some momentum and brought the match to 5-5. Naturally, the match went to 40-all game point, with Alan narrowly missing out, losing 6-5. Meanwhile, on the other court Richard Jones was playing his singles in a similar style. Richard looked in control and battled to gain a 3-5 lead. However, the luck wasn’t with Richard and his opponent really started to play, resulting in Richard losing 6-5. At this point in the evening Cambridge were 3-1 down and their unbeaten status was threatened; they needed to win both their doubles to draw the fixture. Andrew and Alan started very convincingly, but struggled to continue this form, letting Prested back into the match. However, the pair dug in and won 5-8. On the other court, Richard and Jacqueline came out on the victorious side of a good game of tennis also winning 5-8. This meant that the night ended 3-3.
This result means that Cambridge remain comfortable at the top of the table, with their unbeaten status intact. Tennis aside, the Prested team were very hospitable and friendly, which resulted in both teams having a very enjoyable evening.
