Alumni from Oxford and Cambridge Universities descended on CURTC on Saturday, September 26th for hopefully the first annual ‘Not The Varsity Match’ between our two great institutions. The teams were based on Alumni status as opposed to Club membership which boiled down to CURTC and OUTC doing a professorial swap of Prof Guy Kirk (Oxon) for Prof Chris Lintott (Cantab). We didn’t specifically exclude former Blues from the contest but none volunteered anyway.. But we drew the line at anyone in ‘statu pupilari’ even if they were Alumni of one place or the other.
A last minute injury forced Doubles Specialist John Trapp to dust off his Singles game which he did with great aplomb after a slow start he defeated Daniel Baltzer in three sets. This was just as well as over on the Green Court, I was showing exemplary politeness in being outplayed by the Oxford skipper, Liz Eva Leach. Oxford Alumni moved further ahead as Peter Singleton lost to Peter Lawlor in two tight sets. However, JT, reverting to his designated role along with partner Chris, proved too strong for the Guy and Liz combination. The skipper’s second ‘Doubles Specialist’ John Bailey also proved a masterstroke as he and Kate Kirk edged the Peter Lawlor/Mike Fleming combination 10-8 in the ‘match of the day’. Chris Lintott out hit Guy Kirk while Kate came off second best in her singles with Mike. This meant that Cambridge Alumni took the honours for the 1st NTVM, 4-3… We are looking forward to the next edition of the NTVM in Oxford on probably, September 24th, next year.
Many thanks to Pol Roger for their support and the raw materials for the stand-in trophies (above).
